Free Rail Partnership

The Susan Vickers Foundation has secured a landmark, first-of-its-kind partnership with West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway — giving care-experienced people across the region complimentary day travel passes, completely free of charge.

Major rail networks covering the Midlands & beyond

Full day of unlimited travel per pass

No scheme like this has ever existed in the UK. For the first time, a charity has successfully negotiated with a major rail operator to provide free travel passes exclusively for care-experienced people — not as a pilot, not as a trial, but as a fully funded, real partnership. This is a genuine breakthrough.

Each pass grants a full day of unlimited travel across both networks — opening up cities, museums, theatres, landmarks, and experiences that have simply been out of reach for far too many people. London. Liverpool. Birmingham. The Midlands. All accessible, all free.

“For so many, travel has always been out of reach — and with it, the chance to explore culture, arts, and experiences that help shape confidence and identity. This partnership opens doors that were previously closed.”

— Susan Vickers, Founder, The Susan Vickers Foundation

The National Care Leaver Covenant Impact Report found that care leavers consistently cite social exclusion and the absence of shared cultural experiences as major factors behind feeling disconnected from society. This scheme directly tackles that — not with words, but with action.

“By taking away the cost of travel, members of the Foundation will be able to enjoy the best of our network with days out in London, Liverpool and across the West Midlands.”
